Georgian Lyre Shape Mahogany Bracket Clock by Moncas, Liverpool

Georgian mahogany English bracket clock housed in a lyre shape case with ebony inlay, resting on a beautifully carved raised, stepped plinth with carved outswept feet.  The back door with silk lined sound fret.

 

Gilded and chased bezel opening to the painted dial with Roman numerals, original finely cut ‘blued’ steel hands and strike / silent lever above the XII.  The dial signed Moncas, Liverpool.

 

Eight day double Fusee movement with fine quality wheelwork and anchor escapement, striking the hours on a large silvered bell with pull repeat facility.  The backplate with border engraving and central cartouche signed Moncas, Liverpool.

 

The oval shaped pendulum with conforming engraving and pendulum holdfast.  C.1825

 

‘Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World’ by Brian Loomes lists John Moncas as working from Castle Street, Liverpool from 1822 to 1837.
