Georgian Mahogany Longcase Clock by Stephen Mears, Hempnall

 

Finely figured mahogany case with long break arch trunk door with canted corners inlaid with boxwood and satinwood.  Break arch hood with typical East Anglian ‘Wales Tails’ pediment with inlay decoration. Reeded pillars with Corinthian capitals, inlay to the base and resting on bracket feet.

 

Impressive brass dial with fine engraving to the centre, gilded spandrels, raised silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals.  Silvered subsidiary dial for seconds and calendar aperture with original ‘blued’ steel hands.  Signed to the engraved silvered boss in the arch ‘Stephen Mears, Hempnall’.

 

Substantial eight day weight driven movement of fine quality with anchor escapement, striking the hours on a large centrally mounted bell with original weights and pendulum.  C.1780
