Fine French Tortoiseshell Boulle Clock

Waisted case with red tortoiseshell inlaid with fine brass decoration surmounted by an ormolu finial, ormolu mounts throughout and standing on raised bracket feet.  The sides and rear door also decorated with floral brass inlay. The clock rests on it’s original gilded base.

Gilded and chased dial with individual cartouche blue enamel numerals and enamel centre with fine ‘blued’ steel hands signed ‘Klaftenberger, 157 Regent St. Paris’.

Eight day movement striking the hours and halves on a silvered bell, the backplate signed ‘Klaftenberger, 157 Regent St & Paris’ No2048.  c.1870

 

Aubert & Klaftenberger are listed in Brian Loomes’s book ‘Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’ as working in both Paris and Henna c.1830-1840. The partnership also kept a retail premises in Regent Street, London from 1839-1885 and were known for the quality of their clocks listing many of the nineteenth century ‘High Society’ among their clients. They had premises in Paris, London and Geneva.
