John Hayes was the pseudonym for the English painter Edward Henry Fletcher. He owned a small auction house in Blackheath (London) until his 40’s when he suffered a serious illness and was forced to retire.  He became a professional artist, his works being much sought after today, many commanding high prices. (1867-1945) He is well known for painting scenes set in and around the river Thames.

Edward Fletcher was born in Hammersmith 23rd July 1857 and spent his early years growing up in India, the family returned to England while he was still a boy. He was educated at Christ’s Hospital and later at the Chelsea art school, he became a close friend of Daniel Sherrin, the landscape painter.
