Mahogany Striking Domestic Regulator, Lawson, Edinburgh

Domestic Regulator Longcase clock housed in a fine flame mahogany case with stepped plinth to the base.  Long glazed trunk door and typical Scottish style drumhead hood with hinged glazed door.

Painted dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary dials for seconds and calendar and original ‘blued’ steel hands signed ‘Lawson, Edinburgh’.

Eight day movement of fine quality set between two heavy brass plates with dead beat escapement and maintaining power, striking the hours on a coiled gong.  Wood rod pendulum with cylindrical brass bob, finely made brass pulley wheels and brass cased weights, original silvered beat plaque.  C.1830

‘Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’ by Brian Loomes lists Christopher Lawson as working in Edinburgh from 1820 -1837.

 ‘Clockmakers and watchmakers of Scotland’ by Donald Whyte lists Christopher Lawson as a clock and watchmaker working from 19 North Bridge, Edinburgh 1820-37. He was admitted as a freeman of the incorporation of hammermen on 5^th May 1823, his essay being watch movements.  He was in partnership with Richard Miller until 1825 and died at St James Square on 22^nd April 1837.
