George III Single Handed Longcase Clock by John Muzzell, Horsham

Oak Single Handed Longcase Clock by John Muzzell of Horsham.

Slim oak case standing on a raised plinth with long trunk door and a rich patina and original brass escutcheon.  The pull forward hood is flanked by integral pillars with  and quarter pillars to the rear.

Ten inch brass dial with corner spandrals, raised silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals, original single hand and engraved centre signed ‘Jn Muzzell, Horsham’

Thirty hour, rope driven movement with outside countwheel, striking the hours on a large centrally mounted bell with original pendulum and weight C.1785.

 

Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’ by Brian Loomes lists John Muzzell as being born in 1730 in Bolney (Sussex) and working in Horsham c. 1784-1789.
