Art Nouveau Mantel Clock

French Art Nouveau mahogany cased mantel clock with arch top above satinwood inlay depicting a Viking longboat at full sail. Enamel dial with Arabic numerals. Eight day movement signed ‘Couaillet Freres’ striking the hours and halves on a coiled gong. C.1900

The ‘Dictionnaire Des Horlogers Francais’ by Tardy lists Couaillet Freres as having been founded in St-Nicholas D’Aliermont in 1804 and having a retail outlet in Paris (Rue Oberkampf) c.1900. The company registered a patent for a system of compensation for an escapement in 1868.
