George III Stick Barometer by Negretty & Co, London

Highly grained and beautifully figured mahogany case with satinwood stringing, broken arch pediment with original brass central finial, turned and ringed cistern cover with ivory inlay.  Glazed door opening to silvered, engraved register plate with mercury thermometer and sliding vernier pointer.  Glass tube with bulb cistern cover. C.1820

‘Negretty & Co. London’ are listed in ‘Barometer Makers and Retailers by Edwin Banfield as working in London from approx.1820-1840. Banfield’s other publication ‘Barometers Stick or Cistern tube’ shows an illustration of a stick barometer very similar to this one on page 117.
